Globat Launches B2 Server Clusters to Give 'Big Guys' Hosting Reliability to Small Business Owners
Proprietary network technology allows Globat to offer blue-chip ISP reliability within the small business hosting market.
LOS ANGELES, CA - September 21, 2003 - Globat, LLC, a leading Los Angeles-based Web hosting provider, today announced the launch of its proprietary server clustering system, B2 , enabling it to deliver blue-chip ISP reliability at existing small business Web hosting fees. Developed over the course of a year, B2 's technology distributes the many services that make up the average Web hosting account over a network of machines, enabling servers to be optimized for a single task, increasing reliability and performance across the entire hosting network.
'A major issue for other ISPs is that one machine often serves the entire needs for hundreds of customers and tens of services at a time. If a machine is down for an hour, hundreds of sites are also down. With B2 , the worst that can happen is that a single service, like FTP, may be briefly delayed as a redundant machine takes over the workload,' said Globat's CTO, Chris Ueland . 'While similar systems are used at large blue chip ISPs, the development of the B2 technology presents Globat with the exclusive opportunity to offer blue-chip features, as standard, at the affordable end of the market.'
The proprietary software technologies developed by Globat are backed up by hardware technology from 'best of' providers. Nortel Networks' 'Alteon' load balancers are employed as virtual 'air traffic controllers' to route incoming requests between the relevant servers as efficiently as possible. Network Appliance RAID-4 filers provide high-end data storage and reliability. Multiple Intel powered high-end servers then maintain the multiple services Globat offers, such as e-mail, Web access, FTP, mySQL, and DNS.
Globat's B2 clusters are housed at the Equinix data center in downtown Los Angeles , California , as also used by Google, Yahoo, and IBM. A second data center at Marina Del Rey, California , provides DNS and e-mail redundancy.
